Pero Mahomes, a una edad tan joven, si puede mantenerse con buen estado de salud y ser consistente en un contexto en el que tiene continuidad (con Andy Reid como entrenador, el personal, el equipo; todas esas cosas que se están construidas a su alrededor), va a seguir aspirando por los títulos de la AFC Oeste cada año, va a seguir peleando para ser campeones de la AFC, va a seguir luchando para estar en la Super Bowl.

Y, aunque creo que hay mucha fe en que lo que Tom Brady fue capaz de hacer en su carrera nunca será igualado, si hay un jugador que tal vez da un destello de esperanza, sobre la base de que todo sea perfecto a su alrededor (el cuerpo técnico, la organización, la gestión, el liderazgo, los jugadores… Porque todas esas cosas tienen que estar en su lugar, no puede hacerlo solo), es él.

Y lo de Brock Purdy fue eso con lo que Shanahan no tenía en Garoppolo, un poco de agilidad y un poco de habilidad para extender la jugada o empujar la línea de scrimmage. Brock es capaz de hacer eso.

Brock cogerá un pasillo si se lo dan y correrá de ocho a diez yardas o saldrá de la bolsa de protección y seguirá siendo un mariscal de campo y forzará a la defensa a ir a por él antes de que suelte el balón. Pero esas son jugadas que hace fuera del guión que Shanahan ha creado.

Tienes a Christian McCaffrey, tienes a Brandon Aiyuk, tienes a Kittle, tienes a Deebo. Tienes todas estas armas que tú, como quarterback, eres sólo un base. Eres una extensión del sistema de entrega para dar a estos chicos la oportunidad de hacer la jugada. No necesitas ser Magic Johnson, que de repente va a pasar de base a pívot, a alero y a jugador de mates, y eso es lo que es Trey Lance.

Quieren el show de los momentos estelares, como Michael Jordan: de repente se te ocurre esta jugada superior de scramble y lanzas una bomba de 70 yardas, y es un touchdown.

Pero asumes que el 75 por ciento de las otras jugadas, o jugadas de pase, no van a suceder como se entrenaron o dibujaron, y ahí es donde tienes que sopesar las opciones en cuanto a lo que es mejor para el equipo. Y tal vez es permitir que Trey siga siendo ese tipo que tal vez entra en juego en determinadas situaciones, y es un cambio, lo que todavía le permite crecer mentalmente.

Pero esa es una decisión que no tenemos que tomar nosotros, eso es algo de Shanahan y del equipo y ojalá un chico suba a la cima y se separe de los demás.

Question: What do you think is going to be the biggest X-factor in the game on Sunday?

Answer: Well, I really think it comes down to the line of scrimmage. I think controlling the line of scrimmage offensively and defensively is where it starts.

I mean, every game really starts there. How good can your offensive line protect open holes for the run game? How good can your defensive line get after the quarterback? And both these quarterbacks are very mobile, they can extend plays, they're very good inside and outside the pocket.

They force you to cover not only the length of the field but the width of the field, sideline to sideline. That's tough on a defense, really tough on a defense.

So, how that Philly pass rush is able to contain Patrick, keep him in the pocket, and make all his decisions come from within that little parameter, is gonna be very important. How mobile he'll be rehabbing this high ankle sprain, I'm sure he'll be better than he was in the championship game, obviously, but will that also still be a factor?

And then the Philadelphia Eagles, they have a little bit better running game and they can really control the clock situation, the time of possession, by really having balance, being able to run the football well. They have a great offensive line and they have good solid running backs, guys who can be explosive, who can move the chains.

They have a quarterback that they can run those run pass options with, those RPOs, and then they have receivers that can beat you deep or beat you across the middle or whatever it may be.

And you know, I see a lot of mirror imagery from both these offences.

They have a lot of similarities in how they're built, and the type of weapons that they have, but I think the team that is overall stronger and brings a little bit more defensive power is the Philadelphia Eagles.

And a lot of times these games are won because of defense. I still think that the offenses are gonna get points on the board. It's not gonna be a low-scoring game, but I think that presence of the Philly defence will be just strong enough and optimistic enough, that a turnover, a key turnover or something, a key play is gonna be the difference in this game.

With the Super Bowl experience the Chiefs have had recently, Mahomes has accomplished so much so early in his career. If Mahomes comes away with another Lombardi Trophy after this weekend, is he on track to pass Brady in that GOAT conversation?

I mean, he's on that path, he's on that path to greatness. I mean he's great already. What he's doing for that team, three of the last four years going to the Super Bowl, MVP, etc. If there's a guy that could challenge Brady on Super Bowl titles, on MVPs - here's the thing, can somebody have the longevity playing until they're 45? That is such a rarity.

I felt like I could have played into my 40s. Could I have played till 45? I don't know. I don't think so. But I felt like at the end of my career, 38, 39, that I still had plenty left in my tank but I was a different guy. I wasn't the guy that teams were looking toward to continue being the leader of their offence.

But Mahomes, at such a young age, if he can stay healthy and stay consistent in a situation that has the continuity, like Andy Reid as head coach, the staff, the team, all those things that are built around him, I mean, this guy's gonna continue to challenge for AFC West titles every year, he's gonna continue to challenge to be AFC Champs, he's gonna continue to challenge to be in the Super Bowl.

Now it's a matter of, can he win? Can he continue to win those big games, and as much as I think there's a lot of belief in what Tom Brady was able to do in his career will never be matched, if there's one guy that maybe gives a flicker of hope, just based upon everything being perfect around him, coaching staff, organisation, management, ownership, players - all those things have to be in place, you cannot do it alone.

And right now, the pieces are in place for Patrick to have a long successful career and really challenge. Maybe it's not Tom Brady, and going to eight Super Bowls - and winning I don't know what did he win, five, six or whatever, nine Super Bowls, I lost count, right?

Maybe he doesn't play in as many [as Brady], but there are some guys like Joe Montana, Roethlisberger - guys that won multiple Super Bowls - Troy Aikman. I mean he's gonna be a guy that pushes those guys and has a chance to surpass all of those previously mentioned.”

Following the NFC Championship, 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk made a comment earlier this week stating that he thinks that “the Kansas City Pass game is gonna expose” the Eagles' defense. Do you think that that's a real risk? Or do you think that's more of a comment from a frustrated player?

I mean, I think it's a little of both.

I think there's definitely frustration from a player in Brandon - that, hey things didn't go well in their final game. He may have saw opportunities that he had out there on the field but because of the quarterback situation, they just weren't able to take advantage of it.

But when you look at what Philly can do from a pass rush standpoint and how that helps the secondary and how that helps defensive coverage in the backfield where your quarterback is now not getting that extra second of time to allow things to develop, that works in Philly's favor.

I don't think that this is gonna be a situation where Patrick is just able to pick and choose what he wants to do out there and has a field day. It's gonna be tough on him because he's gonna feel the heat at times and Philadelphia has great schemes. They have a great defensive coordinator in understanding how to attack a team and they have talent that gets after it.

And so, you know, nobody has really been able to fully stop Patrick, you can only hope to slow him down. I mean, the 49ers didn't stop Patrick in the middle of the season, he ran up and down on them and he exploited them in a lot of ways.

And is [Mahomes] capable of doing that? Yes, he is. But I also think that this is a different game. This is the Super Bowl Championship title and Philly is gonna be prepared to do whatever it takes in order to slow him down, but will they fully stop him?

Will they take away all his threats? No.

There are gonna be plays made on both sides of the ball and at the end of the day it's gonna be the team that makes the least mistakes that wins the football game.

What’s going on with the quarterback situation in San Francisco now that Jimmy G is out of the picture, who do you think gets that starting role next year? Is it Trey Lance or Brock Purdy?

It'll be really interesting to see how both guys come back from their injuries, and I know Trey is pretty much healthy at this point. Brock, with the surgery and how he recovers from that injury, is gonna be critical as to what he's able to do from a throwing standpoint. He already wasn't a guy that had a tremendously strong arm. So, how will this affect him moving forward?

I like the way Brock Purdy ran the offense. I like the way he played the game when he was starting. What I saw out of him, and being able to read coverage, being able to make good decisions, being able to be accurate with the football - was it a surprise for such a young player to step out on the field and have that sort of success? Absolutely. I mean nobody expected it out of this guy but that's what was so great about it.

He came in being a really good college quarterback at Iowa State.

But here's a guy that probably doesn't excite you when he walks off the bus because he's not gonna run a 4.50 forty and he's not gonna throw the ball from the 30-yard line to the end zone. But, you know, he's gonna go out there and he's gonna find ways to win. That's how he plays the game and in ways, he reminds me a little bit of myself because I was that guy. I'm just gonna find a way. I'm gonna be smart, I'm gonna eliminate mistakes, I'm not gonna get sacked a lot, I'm not gonna turn the football over, I'm gonna be accurate with my decisions and we're gonna move the chains and that's what Brock Purdy did.

He ran that Shanahan offence exactly how Shanahan would like it to be run.

It's different when Trey Lance steps out on the field because now all of a sudden you have this big athletic potential star in a lot of ways. But he's so raw, and all of a sudden for a coach, especially a head coach, who's a play caller, the mentality changes as to: “How do I now put Trey in a position to be successful?”

"... when they compete during the off-season it’ll be interesting to see who sets himself apart from the other guy".

How can I create a run game where we could utilize his legs? Whereas before, he's not trying to create that for his quarterbacks, he's more so trying to just build off of the run game they already have and create bootlegs and nakeds and misdirection type looks to where the quarterback is more than likely gonna throw the football.

And the thing about Brock Purdy was that with what Shanahan didn't have in Garoppolo, a little bit of agility and a little bit of ability to extend the play or push the line of scrimmage, Brock is able to do that.

Brock will take an alley if it's given to him and run for eight to ten yards or he'll get outside the pocket and remain a passer and force the defense to come on him before he lets the ball go. But those are plays that he makes outside of the script that Shanahan has created.

With Trey, you're almost trying to create those opportunities by putting that in the script, and that's new for Shanahan, that's not how he has ever really run his style of offense, and that also exposed Trey in a way.

When Trey got injured, you're trying to run a quarterback up inside the tackle box amongst 300-pound defensive linemen. That's not a safe place for your quarterback to be going. And I think he learned a valuable lesson there, and it'll just be interesting to see how Trey continues to grow mentally within the system and when they compete during the off-season it'll be interesting to see who sets himself apart from the other guy.

When you just look at them on the practice field, you're probably gonna think “Wow, Trey Lance, big, fast, athletic, strong arm, can make every throw.” But then there's the guy that just runs the offense the way it's supposed to be run and that's Brock Purdy.

It’s clearly a tough decision for Shanahan because, on one hand, you have Purdy who's really proven himself this year in a lot of ways. Coming out of nowhere and taking over the offense in a seamless transition, he's got the chemistry with his teammates, and the locker room’s behind him all the way. But then on the other hand you have Trey Lance, with this kind of untapped potential. So if you're Shanahan, are you going with a more proven guy like Brock Purdy or are you taking somewhat of a risk by changing things up in the game plan with Trey Lance?

Well, you look at Trey Lance's start where he had two starts this year.

First game against Chicago, if Brock Purdy starts that game, or if Jimmy Garoppolo starts that game, do the Niners win? I think they do. I mean you're looking at the worst football team in the National Football League is what Chicago ended up being - and yeah, it was a rainy nasty ugly day, but I think that given the situation and what was proven in years prior with Jimmy just being a winner and what Brock proved when he stepped on the field being a winner, those guys just know how to win.

They know how to get their teammates involved. When Trey is on the field, it's almost like everybody's looking for Trey to make that play. When Jimmy was on the field or when Brock’s on the field, they're looking at who's gonna make the play to help the quarterback.

You have Christian McCaffrey, you have Brandon Aiyuk, you have Kittle, you have Deebo, you have all these weapons that, you as the quarterback, are just a point guard. You're an extension of the delivery system to give these guys an opportunity to make the play. You don't need to be Magic Johnson who's gonna all of a sudden go from the point guard to the center to the forward to the dunker, and that's what Trey Lance is.

They want the highlights show like Michael Jordan - all of a sudden you come up with this superior play of scrambling and throw a 70-yard bomb, and it's a touchdown.

But then 75 percent of the other plays, or pass plays, are not going as called or as coached or as drawn up, and that's where you have to weigh the options as to what's better for the team and maybe it's allowing Trey to still be that guy who maybe comes in situationally, and is a changeup, which still allows him to grow mentally.

But that's a decision that we don't have to make, that's something on Shanahan and the team and hopefully one guy rises to the top and separates himself from the other.

But I know that with Trey being a high draft pick, a first-rounder, there's a lot of pressure put on that guy to step on the field and play and we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
